When it comes to the fashion world, especially the modeling world, I am a cold, cold jaded shrew.

I know most plus-size models are size 10/12 and travel with their own set of pads to make them look bigger. I know there’s only ever one famous plus-size model at a time and I know nine times out of ten, if there’s a plus-size model in a straight-sized shoot, she’s there like a token black model would’ve been in the early 70’s.

And it’s not that I’m bitter. I had a blast when I modeled. My neck was too short for me to ever be a real success, but I was popular enough as an artists’ model to pay my bills for a while and I got to do the occasional charity runway thing which was all kinds of fun (Mama can STOMP. IT. OUT.) and I got to meet all sorts of cool artist guys I’m glad I never slept with. If you’ve ever wanted to model and have the required beauty, thick skin and good head on  your shoulders, I say give it a try.

But when you’ve been in and around the industry for a decade or so, you can get a little jaded. You realize Crystal Renn is just the new Mia Tyler, who was the new Kate  Dillon who was the new Sophie Dahl etc etc etc.  Now granted, all those girls –except for Sophie who is back to a straight size and just as gorgeous as ever– are still working as plus size models, but only Crystal is getting the covers.  Crystal is a damn good model but I’m just about exhausted of all the kerfuffle made over her each time she gets an editorial. It’s nothing new. She’s just the token “fat chick” who is virtually indistinguishable from a skinny chick.

THIS, however, is new:

What we have here are four gorgeous undeniably plus-size models in V Magazine’s upcoming “Size Issue” and you know what these photos say to me?

Supermodels are back.

Good old-fashioned Gianni Versace schmoozing, George Michael lip-synch, don’t-get-out-of-bed-for-less-than-$10,000 quoting, early 90’s supermodels and it’s

About

Damn

Time.

Because this? Is gorgeous and lush and LONG overdue. It is full on glamor and I LOVE it because dammit, life is HARD right now for a lot of people and by God if ever there’s been a time to be allowed to do a smoky eye AND a major lip, it’s when we can’t afford anything BUT a new red lipstick and some kohl pencil.

Do I think we’re going to see a preponderance of plus-sized women on the catwalk and in major fashion editorials any time soon? Not hardly. But I DO think it means we’re moving away from the size 00 models and might start seeing fours and sixes again. I think the pendulum will swing away from the hard, post-modern space-age preying mantis ideal we’ve got now back to lushness and a certain over-the-top natural sexiness that just cannot happen when you don’t have any vavas to voom.

So well played, V Magazine. Well played indeed and I  hope this is the start of something big –as it were– for all of us.

Betelgeuse really is a big star.

If placed at the center of our Solar System it would extend
to the orbit of Jupiter.

But like all stars except the Sun,
Betelgeuse is so distant it
usually appears as a
single point of light, even in large telescopes.

Still, astronomers using
interferometry
at infrared wavelengths
can resolve the surface of Betelgeuse and
reconstructed this
image of the
red supergiant.

The intriguing picture shows two, large, bright, star spots.

The spots
potentially represent enormous
convective cells rising
from below the supergiant's surface.

They are bright because they're hotter than the rest
of the surface, but both spots and surface are
cooler than the Sun.

Also known as Alpha Orionis, Betelgeuse is about 600 light-years
away.

I am a photographer here in the Atlanta area and am conctacted often on this subject. My latest blog post answers a lot of the questions I get about getting ones children into modeling and acting. There are some very good agencies here and a big market in the adult "real people" area as well.

I've been sort of cranky lately, so I decided to follow the lead of my friends [info]mermaiden & [info]sidhe_etain and do a list of lovely things in my life right now.

-- Strawberries & Cream Oatmeal. Not a luxury item, but it makes me feel so good inside on a chilly morning. It's a remnant from my childhood-- I make mine more like oatmeal soup, with lots of milk, and it's so soothing and delicious.

-- The Noxman. I love all of my kitties, but Nox has been my special guy this week. If I'm sick, he knows it, and sidles up his bulk to cuddle his warm self against my belly. He runs up to me to give me kisses when I walk in the door. He's cuddled up against my hip as I type, stretching out his funny turkey legs. I just love his big, expressive eyes and his sweet, goofy personality. He knows that he's part of our family. He makes my life better by being in it.

-- My new mohair socks. Jason got me thigh high, bright red mohair jambieres from Sock Dreams for Christmas, and they are so soft and warm and comforting.

-- Wearing Jason's hoodies. His smell + soft, enveloping, well-worn cotton. Perfect.

-- Sorting seed beads. My big task at the shop lately has been transferring all of our seed beads (11s, 8s, 8ts, and 6s) from little, spillable baggies into sturdier, more eye-pleasing tubes. It's taken me several weeks so far, but the end is in sight. I actually have enjoyed this repetitive task because a) seeing a massive amount of rainbow beads spilled out on a silver tray brings out my inner magpie, and b) organizing and sorting them satisfies my inner Virgo.

-- Christmas coffee. A friend sent me some as a Yule gift, and I need to get around to writing a thank you (actually, I have many thank yous I need to write), but the coffee in the care package was particularly delicious. Lightly flavored and spiced, but so, so, so smooth against my tongue.

-- On the theme of yummy things, hot chocolate. Two friends got me hot chocolate as a gift this year, luckily in different flavors. So far, my favorites have been the peppermint & the caramel (with a little sea salt mixed in)!

-- Labradorite. I've finished working with the pieces I got for the Tribal update, but I have some beautiful pieces planned for early spring, as well. I've found some really exceptional, magical golden aqua pieces lately. I am still on the lookout for elusive labradorite with purple flash-- it seems every time I find it, it's in cabochon form. Maybe that's a sign that I need to learn to bezel-set. But every time I find a great piece of labradorite, I just get so happy. It's my favorite stone, by far.

Okay, now to prepare for a busy day.

According to Thingiverse user mappum, who recently published an STL version of a similar gizmo, these beautiful do-nothings are printed to test commercial rapid prototyping machines.

One way I'm going to memorialize and remember [info]danbearnyc

I miss Dan so. On a daily basis -- several times a day, if I'm doing a lot of surfing and seeing outré, fabulous, or outrageous things. Or see a rare movie playing at the Film Forum or on TMC. Or see anything bacon related. Or....

I've decided that one way to remember Dan and honor his spirit is to select one of his fabulous (there's that word again) user icons, upload it and add it to mine, and use it when appropriate -- or even just when I miss him.

It was hard to choose. I love and cry just looking at the disco kitty one, one of the ones he used frequently, almost as a default. But ultimately I chose the one of Auntie Mame, because since his death I've learned that was what (who?) he was for hundreds of friends, many of them Real Life ones, but even more online ones, although with time most of those would have become RL ones. He was always the first to join in LJ meet-ups to greet visiting Live Journalers, sometimes even hosting them, making their trips to NYC with its expensive hotels possible for them. He'd come with suggestions of places to see, things to do, people to meet, restaurants to try, and make them feel welcome. I thought I was just one of a few intimate friends that he would send URLs and YouTube videos and articles of interest, burn DVDs of rare and out-of-print movies, and gift generously with the most fascinating of books, but in the many memorials I read, I learned he did the very same for scores and probably hundreds of friends far and wide.

Have there been any plans for a memorial gathering for his NYC friends? I think a dinner at Sripraphai, the deliriously tasty Thai restaurant out in his Queens neighborhood that he introduced to many of us, would be quite appropriate.

Requiscat in pace. Usquequaque memor quod penetranter requiro.
